Yes. Cooked eggs are safe and nutritious for most dogs. Eggs provide high-quality protein, fat, vitamin A, B vitamins including riboflavin and B12, selenium and iron. They're affordable, available everywhere, and most dogs love them.

The important questions are how they're cooked and how many.

Cook them, plain

  • Boiled or scrambled without oil, butter, salt, masala, onion or garlic is best. An Indian-style omelette or egg bhurji with onions and chilli is not suitable for dogs.
  • Avoid raw egg. Raw egg can carry Salmonella, which can make dogs ill and infect people handling the bowl. Raw egg white also contains avidin, which blocks biotin (a B vitamin) if fed often.
  • Shell: finely ground, baked eggshell can be a calcium source in carefully planned home-cooked diets. Large shell pieces can scrape the gut. Don't add shell without a vet-designed recipe.

How many eggs?

Treats and extras should make up no more than about 10% of a dog's daily calories. One large egg is roughly 70–80 kcal. As a rough guide for an adult dog on a complete diet:

Dog size Approximate safe amount
Toy (under 5 kg) like a Chihuahua or Pomeranian ¼ egg, a few times a week
Small (5–10 kg) like a Shih Tzu or Beagle puppy ½ egg, a few times a week
Medium (10–25 kg) like an Indie or Beagle 1 egg, a few times a week
Large (25 kg+) like a Labrador or German Shepherd 1 egg a day at most, if the diet is adjusted

If your dog eats eggs every day, reduce the main food slightly to avoid weight gain. Obesity is far more common in Pune pets than protein deficiency.

When eggs are not a good idea

  • Pancreatitis, or dogs prone to it (such as Miniature Schnauzers): the fat in yolk may trigger episodes.
  • Kidney disease, where protein and phosphorus are restricted.
  • Egg allergy: uncommon but possible. Watch for itching, ear infections or diarrhoea after starting eggs.
  • Overweight dogs on a weight-loss plan: egg white only, in small amounts, if at all.

Eggs for sick or recovering dogs

Plain scrambled egg with plain boiled rice is a useful, gentle meal for a dog recovering from mild stomach upset, for a day or two, as advised by your vet. For longer recovery, a complete recovery or prescription diet is better balanced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can puppies eat eggs?
A little cooked egg is fine for puppies over 8–10 weeks, but a growing puppy needs a complete puppy food. Too many extras can unbalance calcium and phosphorus.

Will eggs make my dog's coat shiny?
Eggs contain nutrients that support skin and coat, but a dull coat usually has a cause (diet, parasites, skin disease or a hormone problem) that is worth checking.

Can I give eggs to my dog with diarrhoea?
Plain scrambled egg is often tolerated. If diarrhoea lasts more than 24–48 hours, contains blood, or comes with vomiting, see a vet.
